Germanium is a brittle and gray-white metal, with a lustrous appearance. It is a semiconductor and
has poor electrical conductivity. Germanium has the unusual property like water as it expands when
it freezes. When doped with arsenic, gallium or other elements it is useful as a transistor agent. It is
also used as an alloying element, as a phosphor in fluorescent lamps and as a catalyst. Germanium
and the oxide are transparent to infrared radiation, its main applications are in infrared spectroscopes
and highly sensitive infrared detectors.
