Zircaloy-4 is a primary structural material in the nuclear energy industry, predominantly used for
manufacturing fuel cladding tubes in light water reactors (LWRs), including pressurized water reactors (PWRs)
and boiling water reactors (BWRs). Its exceptional neutron transparency minimizes neutron absorption, critical
for sustaining nuclear fission, while its superior corrosion resistance in high-temperature, high-pressure water
prevents coolant contamination.
It also serves as a material for reactor core components like guide tubes and grid spacers, thanks to its good
mechanical strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures.
Beyond nuclear applications, it is utilized in the chemical processing sector for equipment handling corrosive
media, and in the aerospace industry for specialized high-temperature parts, though nuclear use remains its most
dominant application.
